THE DAM
Removing the Saline Dam would restore the river to its natural flow, improving water quality, fish passage, and the health of our local ecosystem, while also reducing the city's long-term maintenance burden. The dam was never built for flood control, so its removal will not increase downstream flooding. Although some residents worry that losing the pond could hurt property values, communities across Michigan have found that replacing aging dams with healthy rivers often creates more attractive, accessible waterfronts that draw recreation and improve surrounding neighborhoods. By planning this change thoughtfully, we can preserve the beauty of the area, enhance public spaces, and ensure that our investment benefits both the environment and the people who live here.
